- Lecturers have walked out at universities including Oxford and Cambridge at the beginning of a month-long strike campaign. Members of the University and College Union are striking because changes to the Universities Superannuation Scheme will leave a typical lecturer almost £10,000 a year worse off in retirement, they say. Petitions signed by 80,000 students, many backing the lecturers, are demanding refunds for lost teaching.
- Unfortunately, Britain is set for the coldest February week in five years as freezing air arrives from Russia. The cold snap will affect the whole of the UK from Sunday night with temperatures expected to drop to -8C in some areas. The Met Office has issued an amber cold weather alert which warns of increased health risks to vulnerable and elderly people. Where is this ‘Spring’ we’ve heard so much about??
- The Queen surprised everyone this week with her appearance at designer Richard Quinn’s show on the last day of London Fashion Week – marking her first-ever fashion show. She made sure to make a splash with her attendance by sitting right next to Dame Anna Wintour (the queen…of the fashion world) and presenting Quinn with the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design.
