- Sajid Javid has shocked Westminster by quitting as chancellor of the exchequer in the middle of Boris Johnson’s cabinet reshuffle. Mr Javid rejected the prime minister’s order to fire his team of aides, saying “no self-respecting minister” could accept such a condition. He has been replaced by Chief Secretary to the Treasury Rishi Sunak – who just seven months ago was a junior housing minister. Mr Javid had been due to deliver his first budget in four weeks’ time, however a Downing Street spokesman would not confirm whether or not this would go ahead as planned.
- Hundreds of flights were cancelled, rail services pared back and the Met Office issued countrywide warnings of danger to life from flying debris as storm Ciara battered the UK on Sunday. Half a million homes lost power and more than 190 flood warnings and 170 flood alerts were issued. The UK is bracing for more disruption this weekend, as storm Dennis is set to bring more heavy rain, flooding and disruption.
