Dr. Seuss Had it Right
I guess I've been living under a rock, but I hadn't read "The Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss until someone gave it to my 3-year-old daughter. It’s a bit sophisticated for her and to be honest the graphics are downright creepy, but as I read it I was blown away. Dr. Seuss captures, in one little book, the ups and downs of life, including one’s career. 2009 and 2010 -- for most people -- required getting out of a slump of some kind.
As Seuss says "when you’re in a slump, you’re not in for much fun. Unslumping yourself is not easily done!”
I'd say to all those in the PR profession that we've got more places to go than ever before. We've got the digital road, and we’ve got the trusted advisor road (to management and companies that understand and embrace the value of a strong reputation). But, as Seuss points out in the book, it’s all about self-motivation, picking paths and unslumping yourself when things don't work out.
My advice? Envision the paths you want to take in 2011. Decide you'll approach them with energy and passion and look at 2011 with the optimism we had as kids.

I'm lucky at work. I've surrounded myself with an army of entrepreneurs that believe everything and anything’s possible, and that it’s worth going down new paths with vim and vigor. And when they don't work out - unslumping ourselves fast.
