One Soul
I have this thing for solitude. I love places that are out-of-the-way, off the map and off the beaten track. I love people, but I also love when you can’t see a single soul.
And speaking of a single soul, let me introduce you to Monowi, Nebraska.
Population: 1.
Monowi may be on the map, but it’s certainly off the beaten track and any other track, for that sort. In fact, its roads are more like dirt tracks.
The town has been featured in a few news stories and I came across it through the Bit Rebels blog, which did a nice writeup of the town and its only resident, Elsie Eiler.
Elsie is mayor, saloon keeper, tax collector and town librarian of Monowi.
I’ve had the chance to visit some out-of-the-way places during my business travels (Buhl, Idaho; Portales, N.M.; Troy, Wisc. and; Saint-Laurent, Quebec, to name a few).
But nothing like Monowi.
Not sure when I’ll be in Northeast Nebraska next, but I do hope my travels allow me to say hello to Elsie one day.
