Fruit Snack Revelations

Joseph McKeating

UntitledOne of the great things about working at Prosek is our quality snack selection. Recently, however, one item on our communal pantry shelves became the topic of heated discussion.

While taking a break to enjoy a pack of Mott’s Medleys fruit snacks, we noticed a carrot had infiltrated the otherwise fruity assortment. Thinking it must be a mistake, we opened another pack. More carrots.  We began to wonder, where did Mott’s get the nerve, the audacity, the chutzpah, if you will, to include carrots - a vegetable - in their FRUIT snacks?! It turns out we’re not the only fruit snack lovers Mott’s had confused; there were multiple accounts online. Fellow Prosekian Amanda Oey also expressed concern.

Once the initial confusion subsided, we came to admire Mott’s for its bold move.  A single, simple decision to do the unexpected sparked conversation and ensured their product would live on in our memories.

But how does this “fruit snack revelation” tie back to counseling financial services clients? It simply serves as a reminder that the best way to stand out is to disrupt the status quo. Always following the crowd ensures mediocrity. We should constantly be in pursuit of clients who blaze their own trail, find out what differentiates their product offerings and package them in such a way that, once encountered, can never be forgotten.

The carrot shaped fruit snacks remind us that in order to grab the attention of your target audience, you need to present something unexpected. Mott’s carrot shaped fruit snacks taste no different than the rest, but their creative idea caught us by surprise and made us notice. That’s our job. End of Story
