LMAO. OMG, TMI and BFF are Officially in the Dictionary

Dawn Zinkewich

OMGI know personally I use LOL wayyyyyyyyyyy too much.  It’s almost like a nervous tick at this point but at least it’s official lexicon now.

The Old English Dictionary has added LOL (laughing out loud), OMG (Oh My God), TMI (too much information), FYI (for your information) and BFF (best friends forever) to its new online edition. I knew this time would come especially since my retired father wrote “OMG” on my birthday card this year.

The questions I have are – when did abbreviated language become so normal that we stopped even needing to say “???”, when is it appropriate to use and why do we embrace it?

The answer is IDK but I think it has a lot to do with the fact we’re all moving way too fast and have TMI to deal with during the day so we need to cut corners and save time in any way possible. If that means be lazy and use acronyms, then so be it. BTW, even though it’s in the dictionary you still shouldn’t use it in formal client communications.

I can’t wait until emoticons make it into the dictionary.  LOL ;-)!  CJP
